The Kalamata (calamata) olive is a large purple, almond-shaped olive with a smooth, meaty texture named after the city of Kalamata in the southern Peloponnese, Greece. This type of olive is superlative to other varieties; they are celebrated for their sweetness, rich flavor, and their difference in appearance. Kalamata olives are a perfect snack alone, or added to cheese, salads and vegetable plates. They’re also fantastic in olive tapenade, a rich olive spread popular in the Mediterranean. Often used as table olives, they are usually marinated and preserved in wine vinegar or olive oil. Hand picked, these olives are salty and very flavorful, Kalamata olives are giant-sized.
